Hong Kong Phooey is the title character of the popular 1970s animated series “Hong Kong Phooey”. Hong Kong Phooey, whose real name is Penrod “Penry” Pooch, works as a clumsy police station janitor by day, but in times of danger, he assumes the identity of a superhero and becomes a crime-fighting hero. In his normal life, Penry Pooch is an absent-minded and clumsy dog. However, in times of danger, he appears as Hong Kong Phooey, a martial arts master.
One of Hong Kong Phooey’s most distinctive features is his mastery of martial arts. Wearing a red karate suit and a yellow sash, this lovable hero wears a samurai-style bandana on his head. Known for his brown feathers and red suit, Hong Kong Phooey makes viewers laugh with his funny and clumsy moves while fighting criminals. His clumsiness is often aided by the help of “Spot”, his police car and secret laboratory.
Created in 1974 by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the character is brought to life with an energetic performance by the voice of Scatman Crothers. The series follows the clumsy and hilarious adventures of Hong Kong Phooey. Penry Pooch’s transformed phone booth and Spot, the secret car he uses to fight crime, are memorable elements of the series. Hong Kong Phooey tries to catch criminals with his karate moves and usually succeeds thanks to Spot’s intelligence.
